PSYC308: Positive Psychology

Reflection

I had the pleasure of taking Positive Psychology with Professor Beverly George during my first official semester as an O.D.U. Global University student. It was my own interest in psychology, my personal experiences, and my pursuit of coaching as a career that led me to take the course. I was looking for a psychological approach that aligned more appropriately to resilience work, as traditional psychology largely focuses on pathology and dysfunction. What intrigued me about positive psychology is its focus on the human versus the condition, leaning on revealing individual strengths and positive attributes. Learning more about positive psychology with Professor George, I gained more insight into its holistic approach and how it applies a broader perspective to psychology. Resilience work requires exceptional communication skills, especially being that you are often discussing extremely personal topics and in moments of intense vulnerability. Additionally, that communication needs to consider different gender and cultural perspectives on things like disclosure and conflict.

Positive psychology fosters more inclusive environments. By focusing on individual strengths, it empowers people to embrace different perspectives and keep an open mind as well as examine their own biases and dissonances. By incorporating positive psychology skills and techniques into coaching, I ensure my clients feel empowered to take on life's challenges. Often, many individuals who have difficulty in dealing with change or adversity often do not feel seen, heard, valued, or all of the above. Inclusive mindsets and environments enables them to actively engage in the process. Positive psychology's attention to the value of interpersonal relationships and connections are bolstered by the study of topics such as how to communicate and collaborate across diverse populations, emphasizing respect and understanding of differences. Positive and proactive approaches implemented in positive psychology allow diversity to be used as a stepping stone toward learning and growth, promoting inclusiveness and empathy among diverse populations.

Resilience will mean different things to different people, and an effective coach will need the skills to navigate those differences. Cultural competence will be crucial to working with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and cultures. Further, coaches may need to adapt their approaches in order to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for their clients. Similarly, applying positive mindsets and coaching strategies equips coaches in leveraging their unique strengths and inner resources to overcome challenges. Both the coach and and the benefit from these techniques, and an increased awareness and understanding of other perspectives and approaches toward adversity. This benefits the coach-client relationship and fosters an environment of mutual respect and support.
